Case Study – Bliss Welded Products C35 Press Upgrade & Servo Feed Retrofit

 

Revro upgraded a Bliss Welded Products Model C35 35-ton open-back inclinable (OBI) press and supplied, installed and commissioned a new push-pull servo feeder. The work brought an older Bliss Welded Products mechanical press up to a current standard of control, safety and feed accuracy, and integrated it with a new client-supplied die as a single, commissioned production cell.

Upgrade, not replace

A sound press frame can have a long working life well beyond its original controls and feed gear. Rather than replace a serviceable machine, the client chose to modernise it – keeping a known press while bringing its electricals, safety, monitoring and feed up to current standard for a fraction of the cost of new plant. Revro carried out the modification, supplied and fitted the new servo feed, installed the client’s die, and commissioned the complete cell.

• Removed redundant air, lubrication and hydraulic lines
• Fitted a Wintriss load monitor
• Added hydraulic overload protection
• Modified the slide adjustment mechanism
• Major electrical upgrade, including a new remote-control operator’s console
• Repaired the slide counterbalance
• Modified the press slide to accept the new push-pull servo feed
• Installed a new die supplied by the client
• Carried out additional fitting work as required to suit the installation
• Test run and commissioned all equipment to the client’s satisfaction

What the servo feed adds

Replacing older feed gear with a push-pull servo feeder is what turns a modified press into a precise, repeatable production cell:

• Programmable feed length. Feed length is set on screen and held to a consistent pitch, stroke after stroke – the basis of accurate part spacing and clean progressive work.
• Push-pull strip control. Driving the strip on both the entry and exit side gives controlled handling of thin and light material through the die, and steadier feed at speed.
• Fast job changeover. Jobs are set and recalled from the 7-inch touch screen, so changing parts is a matter of selecting settings rather than mechanical resetting.
• Repeatability and throughput. Consistent feed means consistent parts, less scrap and a higher, more predictable run rate.
• A modern cell from an existing press. Paired with the load monitor and upgraded controls, the servo feed brings an older OBI press up to a current production standard without the cost of a new machine.

The Bliss Welded Products Model C35 is a 35-ton open-back inclinable press – one of the most versatile general-purpose presses on a fabrication floor. The open back gives clear access for feeding strip and ejecting parts, and the frame can be inclined so finished parts and scrap clear the die under gravity.
